Painting the Built Environment

Exploring School Architecture

This unit of learning explored how our imediate built environment and overlooked architecture effect us. This was done through observational drawing and painting, responding to their school environment. Through walking tours and on-site documentation - using photography and sketching - students examined the visual language of worn surfaces and everyday structures. Inspired by the work of George Shaw, they developed personal and unfiltered representations of their surroundings, culminating in a final painting.
