“In the right hands, assessment can inspire, motivate and provide the feedback that is essential for targeting prompt, corrective help.” (Petty, 2014, p. 447).

Two of the main types of assessment are Formative Assessment and Summative Assessment. The former measures continual progress while the latter concentrates end result grading. While Summative Assessment is often deemed the most important due to the significance placed on State Examinations, formative is essential in scaffolding students to achieve their best. Successful assessment involves the incorporation of both.

Formative assessment provides feedback that helps teachers address learning gaps and enables students to understand their strengths, take ownership of their learning and track progress.

Summative assessment evaluates students’ knowledge at the end of a unit of learning, providing a clear measure of their knowledge and understanding of the project.
