Repeat Pattern Design

Illustrative Natural Objects

Students explored illustrative repeat pattern through the lens of the work of William Morris. Drawing inspiration from native Irish winter foliage and early spring plant life, students developed their motifs through observational drawings and tonal studies. They worked towards creating a refined repeat pattern using either watercolour or coloured pencil, before digitally manipulating their design to visualise real-world applications. The unit encouraged students to appreciate the role of nature in design, while developing visual language, craft skills and digital literacy in tandem.
